SZANDI about herself:

I learnt about handball very early in my childhood because my mother and father were national team players, so I can say that “I grew up on the side of the court”. They took me to handball when I was 11, just to practice some sport for the love of the game. I started as a field player, practiced as a back player, because I was tall and strong. I did not like it I had an aching back, so I gave it up quickly. I decided I didn’t want any connection to handball at all. Two handball players were enough in the family, and I didn’t want to follow in their footsteps. Today I know it was silly. But life commonly tricks us and makes things to go on the opposite direction.

During high school in competitions hosted by the school with a few class mates we decided to participate just for fun. None of us had ever played in goal before, so we discussed that we would all take a turn. I started the game as the goalkeeper, the referee, one of the PE teachers said that I was that good, and he immediately talked to the teacher who was responsible for the school handball team, and explained that he had found the goalkeeper for the team and it was me.

I didn’t have another choice, I started to practice and played in the league between high schools. My stepfather Pál Hoffman used to be the goalkeeper for Fradi started to work with me. Because my teacher Éva Tóth signed with Taksony, she was also a player, I started to play for the Taksony’s junior team in 3rd division (NB2) and I played the next season for them. The team stopped playing the following year, so I continued with Tököl, we won the junior championship in 3rd division the next year. That was one of the best years of my life, because along with the success, we built a great team spirit, we loved being together. The next year I got an opportunity and signed with Érd and my goalkeeper coach became Katalin Turkalya. It wasn’t easy to train every day and not to talk about the summer training preparation. I spent two years in Érd, the first year I played with a double licence so I could also play in Tököl and we came second in the 3rd division and were promoted to the 2nd division. In the second year Érd started a team in the 3rd division, so during that season I played in 3 championships in two age groups NB1 junior, NB/B adult, NB2 adult. I played 52 games during the season, and loved it so much. I loved both groups in Érd and Tököl, I loved to going to the sessions and working with both teams. We won the 3rd division, I was very content.

Unfortunately my junior period ended in 2013, which was when I got an invitation from Tímea Sugár from Székesfehérvár. After a quick period of thinking I was training in Fehérvár and started the hard work with Susu and the team of Fehérvár. I spent the season in Tatabánya (2nd division) with a double licence, and for a little period played in the first division Fehérvár team’s goal. In 2014/15 Fehérvár gave of me to the 2nd division team of Eger, we came 5th in the championship. I believe that with all the match experience that I gained during that year I made a huge step forward with my game. All I wished for was to be a good goal keeper.

Sport and studying have always been important in my life. I’ve now finished at Károli Gáspár University. I have a degree in Hungarian and Communication department and I am about to start my masters in September at the Eszterházy Károly University as a Hungarian-communication teacher. I believe in studying and believe that mental work and development has a positive effect on physical skills and development, which helps you to become a better player.
